Student Observer Grant 2025
The Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (CIAAW) invites applications for the Student Observer Grant
to attend its biannual meeting in Tokyo, Japan, September 1-5, 2025.
This grant is intended to support undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent PhD graduates (maximum two years post-PhD completion, or a similar stage of academic development)
who have (hands-on) expertise in isotope ratio analysis and atomic weight determination or in data processing in this field.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
(1) Be an undergraduate student, graduate student, or have completed their PhD no more than two years before the application deadline.
(2) Possess knowledge in isotope ratio analysis (and atomic weight determination), with expertise in at least one of the following:
– Light stable isotopes and associated techniques
– Heavy stable isotopes and associated techniques
– Alternative methods for isotope ratio determination
(3) Be familiar with metrological principles relevant to isotope measurements and atomic weight assessment.
The grant provides financial support for travel costs to and from Tokyo (Japan) and accommodation for the duration of the CIAAW meeting.
The grant does not include a daily allowance (per diem).
The application process consists of two steps:
Step 1: Written application
Applicants must submit the following documents:
(1) Curriculum Vitae (CV) detailing academic background, research experience, and relevant skills.
(2) Motivation Letter (maximum two pages), which must explicitly address why attending the CIAAW meeting as an observer is of interest
and how participation will be an asset to the applicant’s academic and professional development.
Applications must be submitted via email to:
johanna.irrgeher@unileoben.ac.at and jochen.vogl@bam.de
Application Deadline: April 15, 2025
Step 2: Interview
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with the CIAAW Chair, CIAAW Secretary, and selected CIAAW members.
Only suitable candidates will be awarded the grant.
The selection will be based on academic merit, relevance of expertise, and especially motivation.
Final decisions will be communicated after the interview stage.
For further inquiries, please contact CIAAW Chair Johanna Irrgeher or CIAAW Secretary Jochen Vogl.
We encourage eligible candidates to apply and look forward to receiving your applications!

CIAAW
The Commission on Isotopic Abundances and Atomic Weights (CIAAW) is one of the oldest continuously
operating scientific bodies, formally established in 1899 to standardize atomic-weight values used globally.
The core mission is to evaluate and disseminate atomic weights and isotope abundance data.
Operating under the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC, CIAAW convenes biennially in person to advance the field,
discuss recent developments and data impacting Standard Atomic Weights of the Elements and their isotopic abundances.
The CIAAW upholds the highest standards of inclusivity, fostering collaboration across continents, cultures, languages,
and generations to promote excellence in atomic weight determination and isotope analysis.
